Noah Lyles is the new world champion in the 100 meters, the king number of athletics. The American won the final at the World Cup in Budapest in 9.83, the best time of this season. Lyles succeeds his compatriot Fred Kerley, who was eliminated in the semi-finals.
Letsile Tebogo from Botswana sprinted to silver in 9.88. Britain’s Zharnel Hughes set the same time, but was slightly slower in thousandths and took the bronze.
Lyles, who was confident beforehand and announced super fast times, won his first world title in the 100 meters. He later defends the title in the 200 meters in Budapest. With 9.83, he was far from the world record of 9.58, set by Jamaican Usain Bolt in 2009.
Ugandan Joshua Cheptegei won gold in the 10,000 meters for the third time in a row. The 26-year-old Cheptegei stayed ahead of the Kenyan Daniel Ebenyo (silver) and the Ethiopian Selemon Barega (bronze) after 25 laps in the national athletics stadium of Hungary. The winning time was 27:51.42.
