No survivors in gas explosion on Channel Island Jersey: at least 5 dead | Abroad

“It is with sadness that I confirm that our rescue operation has now become a salvage operation,” said local police chief Robin Smith on Sunday.

At 4 a.m. local time on Saturday morning, an explosion occurred in a three-story apartment building in Saint-Helier on the island of Jersey. The explosion was probably caused by a gas leak. CCTV footage showed a fireball and a lot of smoke as the building collapsed. The explosion was reportedly heard all over the island.

The three-story building has been completely destroyed and according to the police and fire brigade there is no hope for survivors. That is why the rescue operation on Sunday was also transformed into a salvage operation.

The cause of the explosion has not yet been determined. According to the authorities, residents had reported a smell of gas on Friday evening – just hours before the explosion.
