The basketball players of Den Helder Suns have lost the Supercup to cup winner Grasshoppers. The team from Katwijk led almost the entire game and won: 75 – 86.
Den Helder, the national champion, took on Grasshoppers in its own Sporthal Sportlaan. The Katwijkers were the cup winner last season. The home team was behind the times from the first quarter, because Grasshoppers were more effective. After the first quarter, the gap was still small: 14-18. This was partly due to several three-pointers from Mecx van Linge and free throws from Iris Vennema in the wake of the Katwijkers.
The sisters Sonja and Karin Kuijt scored many points and as a result the margin increased at half time: 35-45. The visitors from Katwijk remained stronger and extended their lead in the third quarter: 54-67. Mario Bennes’ basketball players tried to turn the tide in the latter part of the game, but the margin was too large. As a result, Grasshoppers takes the first prize of the season: 75-86.
Vennema was the top scorer of the team from Helder with twenty points.
