Most recently, the Marvel Universe has been under fire from Martin Scorsese and Francis Ford Coppola. Actor Nicolas Cage has now commented on the allegations against the comic book adaptations.

Real cinema looks different

Scorsese complained that Marvel films are not “true cinema” and may even harm creativity in the film industry. In his view, this type of film would lead to cinema being “systematically devalued, excluded, demeaned and reduced to its lowest common denominator, ‘content'”. He would now be missing “emotional, profound experiences” on the screen.

His colleague Coppola criticized that the strips produced by the Marvel franchise were each based on a “prototype” and later reproduced over and over again, only with slightly different looks.

“What’s wrong with entertainment?”

Nicolas Cage, himself an outspoken fan of superhero films and the Coppola’s nephew, spoke up in an interview: “I don’t understand the problem. I don’t agree with their perception or their opinion.” For him, cinema is in a “good position” to elaborate on this idea, he added, “that art house cinema and commercial films have always existed in different spheres, without that blockbusters would have done too much harm to the emerging creativity”.

The actor, who will soon be starring in ‘The Unbearable Weight Of Massive Talent,’ went even further, adding to his Marvel defense speech a paean to the producers: “Marvel has done a really great job bringing the whole family to life entertain,” says Cage. “You’ve given it a lot of thought. I mean, there’s definitely been a big step forward since I did the first two Ghost Rider movies.”

The 58-year-old concluded his remarks with the rhetorical question: “What’s wrong with healthy entertainment that appeals to parents and children and gives people something to look forward to?”
