No play-offs for DOS’46: ‘The pipe was empty’

KORFBAL – DOS’46 failed to reach the play-offs of the Korfbal League. In Gorredijk, the Nijeveners lost 28-19 against LDODK, who also had a chance to finish in the best four. But the indoor season is also over for the Frisians. KZ won against DVO and so that club qualifies for the cross finals, just like PKC, Fortuna and DVO.

Due to the impressive 20-22 victory of DOS’46 last Tuesday at KZ in Koog aan de Zaan, DOS’46 tonight was enough to end a turbulent season with at least a place in the play-offs. But it remained a dream, because LDODK was the dominant party from minute one.

Without Vrieswijk

Interim coach Herman van Gunst did what he could, changed frequently, but admitted afterwards that the faith soon disappeared. “We were not strong in coverage, but also not able to make it difficult for LDODK offensively. Tuesday’s game still played tricks on us.” Moreover, DOS’46 had to do without the strong man under the basket, Pascal Vrieswijk. He was missing because of Corona. “But I don’t use that as an excuse,” says Van Gunst.

Malestein

“At halftime the difference was five. I still had the hope that we could bring the difference to three or two immediately after the break, but that did not work,” the trainer/coach continued. Max Malestein, the big man in Koog aan de Zaan on Tuesday, still scored the 16-12, but LDODK reacted immediately. Thanks to the strong playing Marjolijn de Kroon, Erwin Zwart, Marlou Kuiper and Julian Frieswijk, the difference was quickly brought to ten points and the game was over and DOS’46 literally and figuratively threw the towel. Malestein’s substitution was significant, although he was forced to be brought in again later because Thomas Visser had to go to the side with cramp.

KZ wins

In the meantime, the supporters of DOS’46 kept a close eye on the standings at KZ – DVO and announced it loudly to the home crowd, so that the green shirts also played a won match, but also a match without a prize.

‘Selection too narrow’

The final chord was for Herman van Gunst, who was sung to in the last minutes of the game. Afterwards, the trainer/coach thanked the supporters with a deep bow. “For us, survival was the goal. We had to avoid the relegation group. We did that. This would have been a bonus, but to be honest our selection is simply too narrow for that.”
