It remains silent around Lord Nelson. The owner of the renowned Meppeler discotheque wants to build apartments at the closed party location, but the municipality says it is officially unknown.

At the end of January, RTV Drenthe reported that the doors of the discotheque on Prinsenplein will no longer open. Owner Bas Nijstad and partner Gerben Meeuwes no longer saw any point in a catering destination at that location and made plans for apartments.

“The municipal executive is aware of the initiative through the media. The municipal executive has not yet received any submitted plans for this location,” the mayor and aldermen replied to questions from the ChristenUnie. “So far there has been no discussion with the initiator as a result of an application for preliminary consultation or a license application.”

The buildings on Prinsenplein currently have no listed status. The ChristenUnie thinks the building should be demolished, after which new construction can be built, despite this undesirable. “The cultural-historical value map states that there may be building-historical values on the inside,” says the ChristenUnie. The party wants to know how the council will visualize this and take it into account.

“The Municipal Executive will have a building-historical study carried out into these buildings. This study will have to demonstrate to what extent there are building-historical values present. Based on the results of this study, any follow-up steps will be taken”, the mayor and aldermen answer.
