No prohibition is included in a new contract for advertising on Abris in the province, a majority in the States decided. PvdA and GroenLinks continue to insist on a ban, but their coalition partners VVD and BBB are against it.

VVD State member Jeroen Boer calls the proposal “censorship” and believes that residents should be able to decide for themselves how to go on vacation. A ban on advertising products such as pizza or soup goes the VVD “too far”. Ja21 calls it “patronizing in superlative”, and the BBB believes that North Hollanders should decide for themselves what they eat.

According to the 2022 motion, a ban would have no financial consequences, but that turns out to be incorrect. Moreover, enforcement would mean a lot of extra work for civil servants.

Another argument that came by is the random nature of the ban on ‘fossil’ and fish and meat products. “Why should you not advertise for sustainably caught fish, and for vegetable tofu, that is particularly bad in terms of production for the environment?”, Boer wonders.

According to Walter Freeman van GroenLinks, the province undermines its own credibility by refraining from a ban, a very important issue for him. The PvdA argued that the College of Provincial Executive “doesn’t feel like”. But according to deputy Olthof, the college takes “no its own position”. The SP may still come with a new proposal at the next meeting, but given the voting ratio (23 for a ban and 32 against), a ban seems to be a chance.

Advertising on Abris yields the province about two tons each year.
