The surviving members of Nirvana were not part of the official Fireaid program, but towards the end of the Kia Forum show they entered the stage to with St. Vincent “Breed”, with Kim Gordon “School”, with Joan Jett “Territorial Pissings” and with Violet Grohl, the 18-year-old daughter of Dave Grohl, to play “All Apologies”.
Dave Grohl, Krist Novoselic and Pat Smear dissolved Nirvana after Kurt Cobain’s death in 1994, but came back together in 2012 to record “cut me some slack” with Paul McCartney. Two years later, when they were included in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, they performed with St. Vincent, Kim Gordon, Joan Jett and Lorde. Later in the evening they played a longer set in the tiny Brooklyner Club St. Vitus. Most recently, they were on stage in 2018 at Cal Jam in San Bernardino/California.
Singers replace Kurt Cobain
Since Cobain’s death, a singer who sang his texts has been hired in almost every appearance. The idea came early for them in rehearsals for admission to the Hall of Fame in 2014. Grohl told the Rolling Stone at the time. “We don’t even ask someone else. If we can fill the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame with these incredible women who sing Nirvana songs, then we have made our own revolution. This added a completely different dimension to the show. It added substance and depth, so it didn’t just become a hymn of praise. It was more about the future. “
The first rehearsals were incredibly emotional. ‘The first time we played together was like seeing a ghost,’ said Grahl. “The second time it was a little more reserved. And last time it was out with Demi Moore and Patrick Swayze, like in this damn pottery scene. Usually we had the song with the third take. It sounded slowly like Nirvana. Our road crew and some friends were in the room when we started with the first time. The jaws were on the floor. “
At this point, they had no idea whether they would ever play together again. “It’s a good question,” said Novoselic about the Rolling Stone. “I mean there is the Foo Fighters, and Dave has other projects going. And I also have obligations. But you should never say. We made it. I will certainly not say no. Maybe one day we can even make new music. “
