With a gala, Germany completed its qualification for the World Cup. The national coach speaks of pink animals, one of his players speaks of the title.
With the best performance of a bumpy qualification, Germany stormed to a direct World Cup ticket. National coach Julian Nagelsmann’s seemingly substituted team dispatched Slovakia 6-0 (4-0) in the “final” for group victory in Leipzig. After the final whistle, the conclusion was positive.
This is what the protagonists say:
Julian Nagelsmann (National coach on ZDF): “I’m proud of the team. We had a bumpy start to qualifying, today there was pressure on the kettle. It was a very good game. (…) Every player played an extremely good game today and worked like a pink animal. We got into the game really well in terms of football, thanks to a huge investment in defense. We then also scored great goals, were very convincing in terms of football, the team did really, really well.”
Captain Joshua Kimmich: “We knew if we got close to our top level that we would win. The coach prepared us extremely well, set us up well and gave us really good words. It was a very, very strong game.”
Nico Schlotterbeck: “If we play like we did today, we’re a very good team. If the guys who are still good for us, who are injured, come back, then I think we’ll play a very good World Cup. The first step has been taken – and the next steps will continue at the World Cup. If we play like we did today, it doesn’t matter whether we’re ranked 46th in the world or first. Then we can beat any opponent. We’re still Germany. We want to achieve something. I want to go to the World Cup for this thing to win.”
Nick Woltemade: “It was a really good game today. We didn’t let anything go wrong from the first second to the last. We’re happy that we were able to play like that. It’s very, very relieving.”
Serge Gnabry: “If we play like we did today, then we have a chance to achieve something big. It was just great to be on the pitch today. It felt like a team. We ran one for the other. We played really well together. That was just a good feeling today and we want to take that with us.”
