‘Nice bike ride’ is going smoothly: the foundation also wants a wheelchair bike on Wieringen

There will be a second location for a Meer-Y-Bike: Hippolytushoef. The Meer-Y-Bike is an electric wheelchair bicycle where the elderly and disabled can make a free trip with a volunteer. Initiator Mary van Langerak of the foundation Cycling is something you do together hopes to have enough money for the second bike this year. Cost: 12-thousand euros. “We won’t make it alone. Some nice gifts are already coming in.”

Mary van Langerak works as a nurse in the region and noticed that many people were indoors with the beautiful weather and had no opportunity to go outside. Last year the ‘Meer-Y-Bike’ was created so that people who are not so mobile can still make a trip with an adapted electric bicycle free of charge.

Unroll

The ‘nice bike ride’ is such a success that more and more requests are coming from the region from people who would like to join, says Mary van Langerak. Hence the extension to Wieringen. “The aim is to roll out the initiative throughout Hollands Kroon, including Anna Paulowna and Niedorp.”

And who will be traveling with the wheelchair bike? One of the early members is Thea Increase from Wieringerwerf. She has been confined to a wheelchair for years and did not hesitate for a moment to sign up. A trip by bike is a relief for Thea, she previously told NH News: “I really like it, because otherwise I won’t get anywhere. When it was proposed, I immediately offered myself. Otherwise, you’re at home .”

‘Memory Lane’

Last fall, Mary van Langerak cycled a ‘trip down memory lane’ with an 86-year-old emigrant from Australia. His daughter had heard of the wheelchair bicycle and given her father’s health, it was his last visit to the Netherlands. Van Langerak: “It was very special to drive someone around who hasn’t lived here for so long. Those English cries when he saw something beautiful. And he really wanted to eat apple pie.”

The Cycling Doe Je Samen foundation has a call done and wrote to several companies and agencies to get money together for a second bicycle. “It may be a bit heavier than the bicycle we have now, so that we can also take electric wheelchairs on such a trip. Fortunately, there are already some private individuals who have made a donation and we have already received a donation from a company on Wieringen. received a nice gift.”
