NH helps: Brunch room owners desperate due to staff shortage, always overtime and never free

Staff shortages are noticeable in many sectors. NH Media will draw attention to this in the near future. That’s why we’re joining brunch room Bliss in Purmerend this week. This successful business has been run for five years by Yasemin Öskurt and daughter Melissa Koetsier. Extra hands are desperately needed, but unfortunately they are hard to find. With seven-day work weeks and a lot of overtime as a result.

In ‘Pak An Doen: Personnel Wanted’, Isabella Prins and Doris van Baar visit crucial companies and institutions to see how they are dealing with the current staff shortage. They lend a helping hand where necessary. Each episode focuses on one particular sector. Tonight brunch room Bliss, from 17:10 pm on NH Nieuws.

From the Hoogstraat in Purmerend, the sweet smell of pastries greets you from afar. On the window of brunch room Bliss hangs a pamphlet with a call to apply in bold letters: ‘Wanted. Immediately. Service employee.’

Second living room

It is the thriving brunch room and cake maker of Yasemin Öskurt and daughter Melissa Koetsier. According to visitors, the case has become an indispensable part of the Purmerend street scene. They call it their ‘second living room’. But the brunch room seems to be gradually succumbing to its own success. There is more work than the owners can handle.

“It’s tough. I hope someone joins soon.”

To make matters worse, Melissa, who assists at least two days a week and can also be found regularly in the shop in the evenings, can help less and less. She recently got a busy job in her own field. Yet quitting is not an option. “If my daughter stops, I have to stop too. It’s hard, but then I can’t make it anymore,” said Yasemin earlier to NH News.

Few applications

Extra hands are therefore desperately needed, especially in the operation. Yasemin and Melissa advertise themselves silly, but staff are nowhere to be found. There are few applications and if someone already does that and is invited for an interview, they often hear nothing back. Meanwhile, the situation is hardly sustainable. “It’s tough. I hope someone joins soon.”
