At the 500th tournament in London, no way is currently going past Tatjana Maria. The 37-year-old ensures a novelty in her previous career-and shocks the next favorite.

Tatjana Maria provided the next Faust thick surprise at the WTA tournament in London and reached the final of a 500 tournament for the first time at 37. In the lawn competition in the British capital, Maria (Bad Saulgau) also sensationally defeated Australian Open winner Madison Keys from the USA 6: 3, 7: 6 (7: 3) and now reach for her fourth title on the WTA tour.

After 90 minutes, Maria converted her second match ball, hopped over the square with joy like a teenager and then fell into her family. “I can’t believe it, a dream will come true,” said Maria in the winner’s appetite: “I am very proud.”

In the final, Maria meets Paris Olympic champion Zheng Qinwen (China) or Amanda Anisimova from the USA on Sunday. Maria, who will climb 52 of the world rankings by the final in the final and thus replaces Eva Lys as a German number one, has so far had a flawless final record: In Mallorca (2018) and twice in Bogotá (2022, 2023), she won each.

The strong lawn player Maria, who had reached the Wimbledon semi -finals in 2022, defeated the next top opponent on Saturday. Previously, the mother of two had prevailed in London against the former US Open finalist Leylah Fernandez (Canada), the former French Open finalist Karolína Muchová (Czech Republic) and the former Wimbledon winner Jelena Rybakina (Kazakhstan). Maria had moved into the main field through the qualification.

The tournament in the Queen’s Club in the West Kensington district, in which women are starting again for the first time since 1973, serves to prepare for the third Grand Slam of the year in Wimbledon (June 30th to July 13th).
