35,000 new homes will be added in the East Flank of Rotterdam. The East Flank is the area between Prins Alexander and Zuidplein. The construction coincides with the arrival of a new bridge between IJsselmonde and Kralingen, rapid public transport between Zuidplein and Kralingse Zoom and a new Stadionpark train station. South and East are thus connected. Homes, work, school and other facilities become better and faster accessible. The shorter travel time means more opportunities for everyone, because more jobs and training are within reach. The arrival of the bridge and the new public transport also offer opportunities to make the area more (economically) attractive, lively and socially safe. The existing surrounding neighborhoods also benefit.

The agreements on this matter were laid down today, January 18, 2024, in an administrative agreement by the Ministries of Infrastructure and Water Management and the Interior and Kingdom Relations, the Rotterdam Metropolitan Region The Hague and the municipality of Rotterdam. These are the 4 initiators of the project.

Together they are making € 1,288 million available for the construction of the bridge and the public transport connection between Kralingse Zoom and Zuidplein. €197.4 million is available for Stadionpark station.

Between 2024 and 2027, the bridge, the public transport connection and the station will be further developed and made concrete in consultation with involved residents, entrepreneurs and organizations. This phase is completed with a Project Decision, after which preparations for the actual construction can start.

Large-scale housing construction

In order to meet the housing construction target in the Netherlands of 981,000 homes, the government is committed to large-scale housing construction throughout the Netherlands. This is necessary due to the major shortage of housing in a number of regions where the realization of only small and medium-sized locations with good affordable housing would be insufficient. In the spring of 2022, the cabinet, in consultation with involved local authorities, designated 17 large-scale NOVEX housing construction locations. Up to and including 2030, approximately 288,000 homes can be built there (approximately 30 percent of the total target) and another 300,000 homes after 2030.

The Oostflank is part of 1 of the 17 large-scale NOVEX housing locations. A total of around 35,000 homes could be built here. Until 2030, 19,000 homes will be built and then another 16,000, of which 30,000 in the municipality of Rotterdam and 5,000 in Capelle aan den IJssel. More than 4,000 homes are planned for the new Stadionpark station.
