After the fifth World Cup victory of her career, Emma Aicher immediately followed up – and ended up just a hair behind a superstar.
Emma Aicher has confirmed her top form and achieved another podium finish at the World Cup in Andorra. Just 24 hours after the victory, the best German ski racer followed up with second place in the second Super-G. This time the 22-year-old was only defeated in Soldeu by Sofia Goggia from Italy – Aicher was 0.24 seconds short of a double success. The second DSV starter, Kira Weidle-Winkelmann, missed the top ten due to a major mistake in the middle section and was in 14th place after 30 riders.
As a result of Goggia’s victory, Aicher’s chances of winning the overall discipline ranking this winter decrease considerably. While the German had fought her way up to 96 points on the Italian on Saturday, she is 116 points behind with two races still to go. Aicher had previously won two silver medals in downhill and team combined at the Olympics. The New Zealander Alice Robinson, second in the ranking, has 32 points more than Aicher.
Next weekend there are two downhill runs and a Super-G in Val di Fassa. Then Goggia could already win the small crystal ball as the best in Super-G. Aicher’s chances of triumphing in the downhill are still good: she is 94 points behind the leader Lindsey Vonn, but the American is seriously injured.
