★★★★ There are movies that one does not expect and they generate a surprise even if they are full of commonplaces. Or better, for that reason: because they are full of commonplaces and they subvert, pervert, twist them until they reveal their truth and their absurdity at the same time. Like 3000 miles to hell or Mr. Brooks -that class-, El peso… is the story of a man named Nicolas Cage who, with no future as an actor, accepts a million dollars to appear at a mega-millionaire’s party. who adores him But he ends up being a CIA agent against this millionaire and new and true friend that he has found. That is the plot, which takes advantage of the fact that Cage has been accepting any role for years to pay off debts, but at the same time he is sneaking a really impressive and bulging career. In other words, a reflection on Hollywood with the most spectacular tools of Hollywood, a film that shows -it doesn’t say, it shows- that the great spectacle is a magnifying glass for reality, not a veil that hides it. At the same time, it’s hilarious and is, if you will, a kind of parody of Adaptation, another of Cage’s “weird” movies, where reality and fiction are combined in an ingenious and intelligent way (which is not the same thing). Fresh air, absolute game, desire to make real cinema with all the seasonings. Cage is a great and that’s what it’s about.
