★★★★ Although adapted from a horror novel, this is a full-fledged Shyamalan film: the supernatural manifests itself before we can call it a “surprise” and the twist is rather metaphysical. In principle, a couple of parents with their daughter go on vacation and four strangers kidnap them: someone must die to avoid the End of the World. A very strong premise that Shyamalan exploits with elegance and with a very defined characterization of his creatures. And here comes what all his films have from the beginning: a meditation, with the best tools of the genre and entertainment, on the existence of the divine and the scope of his power. In this case, the look is still pessimistic. Shyamalan, who doesn’t always get it right (lately, he hasn’t done it very often) is an author who leaves us with more questions than answers, even satisfactorily resolving his plots. There are few like that.
