The celebrations between the natives were accompanied by silent protests of some Maori leaders Against government officials, in a context of growing racial tension in the country. The prime minister, Christopher Luxon, took part in the commemorations in Onuku Marae, on the island of the South, where, a few months after the original signature, the Maori of the South had also signed the Treaty.
