The New York Jets have parted ways with the last relic of the Aaron Rodgers era and released wide receiver Allen Lazard. The NFL team fulfilled the player’s wish.

Lazard recently no longer played a role in head coach Aaron Glenn’s plans. In the last four games, the pass receiver was left out even though he would have been fit.

Accordingly, the 30-year-old asked for a dismissal, according to “ESPN”. His hope: to spend the last few weeks of the season with a team that is still fighting for the playoffs and maybe more.

The Jets now complied with this request. The team had recently focused on the development of its young receivers anyway. Adonai Mitchell, John Metchie III and Isaiah Williams took over the helm, also because superstar Garrett Wilson has been out injured for weeks. In this case, Aaron Glenn says he is still “hoping” for a comeback, but playing this season is not particularly likely.

NFL: A final relic of the Rodgers era

For Allen Lazard, almost two years in the Big Apple come to an end. The receiver moved to New York in 2023, primarily at the request of Aaron Rodgers. The Jets quarterback at the time spoke out in favor of Lazard, with whom he played for the Packers for five years.

Lazard received a four-year contract worth up to $44 million. However, this was adjusted before the current season. Lazard took a pay cut of $8.75 million, and the fourth year of his contract became a void year, so Lazard would have become a free agent after the season anyway.

Meanwhile, Lazard never lived up to expectations. During his time in the Big Apple, he had 70 receptions, 911 yards and eight touchdowns. He only had ten catches for 70 yards this season.
