The Argentinian first division club Independiente has signed the former national soccer player Carlos Tevez (39) as a coach.
“Welcome and good luck in this stage,” wrote the club on Platform X, formerly known as Twitter.
Former coach Ricardo Zielinski resigned on Sunday after Independiente lost to Colón. Tevez briefly coached Club Rosario Central last year.
Tevez won 76 caps for Argentina and scored 13 goals. He has twice been voted Footballer of the Year, once in Brazil, where he also won the championship with Corinthians São Paulo, and once in Italy, where he won the title twice with Juventus. Among other things, five championships with the Argentinian top club Boca Juniors, two titles in the Premier League with Manchester United and one with Manchester City are among Tevez’s successes – as well as the Champions League victory with United in 2008.
He was also Olympic champion with Argentina in 2004. In his homeland, Tevez is called “El Apache” because of his origins in the poor neighborhood of Fortress Apache near Buenos Aires. A series about the youth of the future football star can be seen on the Netflix streaming service.
