The images, originating from NASA’s Mars Explants, show hundreds of so -called ‘reverse canals’ – paved river deposits that now protrude above the landscape. Some networks extend over more than 160 kilometers. According to the researchers, only regular rain or snowfall can have fed these river systems.

It is remarkable that it concerns the old area Noachis Terra, where previous models did predictable precipitation, but never physical evidence was found. So there are now, with indications that the area was covered 3.7 billion years ago with vast rivers and possibly even lakes.

The find reinforces the theory that Mars was once a warmer, wet planet, until it lost his magnetic field and lost his atmosphere – and water – to space. However, scientists suspect that there are still significant water reserves hidden below the surface.
