A fresh patent should show how the long promised Tesla Roadster could still become a reality.

• Tesla has submitted a patent for an active aerodynamic system
• The patent that has now been submitted does not contain any evidence of announced cold gas engines
• Market potential remains uncertain

A recourse to old ideas

Tesla wants to attract attention with a new patent. Instead of rocket drive and science fiction, the concept primarily offers hot air and a technical principle that was tried decades ago. With the help of fans and movable side swellers, the upcoming roadster is to be pressed more on the street. The idea behind it is to create a negative pressure under the car so that it is better off on the road at high speed. Sounds technically ambitious, but is not new. As Inideev reports, the basic principle comes from the motorsport of the 1970s. At that time, racing teams experimented with so-called “fan cars”, which generated additional downforce using fans. Models such as the Brabham BT46B or the Chaparral 2J were considered revolutionary, but were quickly banned due to changes in regulations. Tesla now takes up exactly this technology – but for a road vehicle.

From the rocket to the fan

Anyone who remembers the first presentation of the Tesla Roadster thinks of spectacular announcements: rocket-like acceleration, 1.1 seconds from zero to a hundred, an optional spaceX package with cold gas nozzles-a car that promised more science fiction than reality.

There is nothing more to be seen in the current patent. As Electrek explains, there is no indication of the so-called SpaceX package. Instead, Tesla relies on technology close to the ground, which has significantly more to do with “drive” than “buoyancy”.

Technically exciting – practically doubtful

The fan car idea looks clever on paper. But how well can it really be implemented? According to Automotive Addicts, this innovation can hardly arouse interest among buyers who love super sports cars with high-end performance. In traditional motorsport, enthusiasm is still on the driving experience, such as engine noises and vehicle reaction. The question also arises whether an electric car which accelerates from 0 to 100 km/h in almost a second, is what the market for electric cars currently needs. According to Reuters, Tesla’s sales figures have decreased significantly in Europe, especially in Europe. The reason for this is the competition from China, which offer significantly cheaper vehicles.

A car that doesn’t come

Since the performance in 2017, the Tesla Roadster has been one thing above all: an announcement. The market launch has been postponed again and again, new technical highlights always promised – but nobody has seen a series -ready vehicle so far. The new patent also does not change anything. When – or whether the vehicle is really built remains unclear.
