New owner sees Chelsea lose profit in 97th minute, curtain falls for Watford | Foreign football

With new owner Todd Boehly in the stands, Chelsea have painfully lost two points in their pursuit of a Champions League ticket. Wolverhampton Wanderers came back from a 2-0 deficit at Stamford Bridge. The equalizing goal came in the 97th minute.

Chelsea reported this morning that an agreement has been reached with an American consortium led by businessman Todd Boehly to take over the club. Owner Roman Abramovich put Chelsea up for sale in March as a result of the Russian invasion of Ukraine. The Russian is on a sanctions list of the British government and therefore had to deal with all kinds of restrictions.

American Boehly, co-owner of the Los Angeles Dodgers baseball team, watched from the stands on Saturday. In the 38th minute, he saw a goal by Ruben Loftus-Cheek disallowed for offside. After intervention by the video referee, Chelsea were awarded a penalty about 10 minutes after the break for a foul on Lukaku. The Belgian striker, who was mainly a substitute this season, used this himself. Two minutes later, Lukaku took advantage of losing the ball in the defense of the ‘Wolves’.

Francisco Trincão, on behalf of the away team, reduced the tension with the 2-1 10 minutes before the end. Defender Conor Coady headed in the equalizer in stoppage time. Former Ajax player Hakim Ziyech did not get any playing minutes.

The top four in England qualify for the Champions League. Chelsea has 67 points after 35 of the 38 matches, Arsenal and Tottenham Hotspur played one game less and have taken 63 and 61 points so far.

Relegation Watford

For Watford, his stay in the Premier League comes to an end after just one year. The ‘Hornets’ lost 1-0 on a visit to Crystal Palace and thus accompany Tim Krul’s previously relegated Norwich City to the Championship. The third and final relegator is not yet known. Currently, Manchester United’s Everton mercenary Donny van de Beek is under the line, but the club still has Burnley and Leeds United in their sights.
