New in the database: GDR Oberliga 1952/53 with six-packer Arlt

Dynamo predecessor Meister

The 1952/53 season of the GDR Oberliga is now available in the Transfermarkt database. The SG German People’s Police Dresden, predecessor of today’s Dynamo, only became champions in the decider against BSG Wismut Aue, now FC Erzgebirge. After 32 match days, the Saxon teams had collected the same number of points. Dresden won 3-2. The top scorer of the season was Harry Arlt from BSG Rotation Dresden (today Dresdner SC) with 26 goals in 31 games – the then 26-year-old scored a total of six of his goals in the 9-2 win against Motor Gera at the end of February.

Last year’s champion Turbine Hall (go to Article) meanwhile escaped relegation with only one point lead despite only insignificantly changed squad and was never able to build on the performance of the previous season. Forwards Berlin, which had started the season as a Leipzig club, Motor Oberschoeneweide, Motor Jena and Motor Gera had to go into the second division instead. With the relegation of Oberschoeneweide, now known as Union Berlin, and Forward, the last two Berlin clubs were relegated from the GDR Oberliga.

The FDGB Cup, which took place in the summer, was called off after the first round, which was later cancelled, due to the popular uprising of June 17, 1953.
