FIA, FOM, teams and power unit manufacturers have reached agreement on a package of changes to the technical regulations which will be presented to the World Motor Sport Council on 23 June in Macau

Formula 1 officially prepares the first corrections to the new technical cycle. FIA, FOM, teams and power unit manufacturers have reached an agreement on a package of changes to the technical, sporting and financial regulations for 2027 and 2028. The discussion was started after the first races of the 2026 season, “after discussions”, cites the FIA press release which arrived in the evening, that is, when some critical issues had emerged in the management of the energy provided by the new power units. There was work to be done, that much was known. The issue above all concerns the balance between the internal combustion engine and the energy recovery system: a central theme for the future of this sport, increasingly oriented towards efficiency, sustainability and innovation, but also called not to sacrifice entertainment.

the changes

The package, we read, “introduces a gradual rebalancing of the contribution of the internal combustion engine and the energy recovery system in the 2027 and 2028 seasons”. The proposed changes will intervene on the energy flow of fuel, and on flexibility in energy management, with the aim of making qualifications more “flat-out”, i.e. less conditioned by energy saving. At a time when the World Championship is already measuring the effects of the new rules, Formula 1 is therefore trying to put itself in a position to anticipate problems and correct the technical framework without distorting it. The FIA, it continues, “will now accelerate the formal approval process, so as to provide all parties with clarity in advance and sufficient time to adapt to the revised requirements”. The changes will be submitted to the World Motor Sport Council on June 23 in Macau.
