Universities and colleges are struggling with a new DDoS attack on their networks on Thursday. The institutions suffer from ‘slow internet connections or even no connection’, the SURF organization reports. The Máxima Medical Center is also connected to that network and is experiencing problems due to the attack.
“At the end of the day on Wednesday, the problems were resolved and we no longer saw any delays on the internet. But since half past eight this morning we have noticed the same activities on our network again,” SURF spokesperson Tom Hoven said.
SURF was also the target of a DDoS attack on Wednesday. Systems are bombarded with so much traffic that they collapse under the pressure and become inaccessible.
Attack on the south of the country
According to the SURF spokesperson, this only concerns Brabant and Limburg. He doesn’t dare say what the reason is. “It can also change from institution to institution how much they are affected by the attack. We are working hard to ensure that it is resolved quickly.”
Most universities, colleges and many MBO schools in Brabant are affiliated with the SURF network. The Máxima Medical Center in Eindhoven and Veldhoven also runs on that network.
Problems in hospital
According to a visitor, all systems were shut down in Eindhoven on Thursday morning. According to this visitor, employees could not view files or make appointments.
But according to a hospital spokesperson, the problems are not too bad. “Everything works in principle, but with a delay,” says Marijke Bax. “It is not that serious that patient care is at stake. Yesterday, care continued as normal.”
Tilburg University has announced that education there is currently continuing as normal. “Not everyone notices it, for some the system works slower or slower. Some don’t have any problems.”
The university is not concerned about safety at the moment. “All surveillance systems now work as usual. Since the problems at the TU in Eindhoven last week, we have increased our ‘dike monitoring’ somewhat.”
