The 54-year-old Imamoglu has been detained since March, following an investigation on corruption and accusations of ties with terror. Imamoglu has denied all accusations. According to the mayor and his opposition party, the Republican People’s Party (CHP), it is an attempt by President Erdogan to prevent him from participating in the 2028 presidential elections.

In the latest indictment, Imamoglu is accused of insulting two prosecutors during a court session in March. If he is convicted for this, he risks a prison sentence of a maximum of four years.

Mass demonstrations

The arrest of Imamoglu led to massive demonstrations in Istanbul and other Turkish cities earlier this year.
