New Angelslo Community Center welcomed; mainly concerned with traffic situation

Residents of Angelslo have a positive view of the plans for the new community center to replace the current and outdated accommodation. Tonight residents were able to catch a first glimpse of the plans during an information meeting. There were also concerns, but mainly about the new traffic situation around the new living room in the district and the adjacent shopping center.

In January it was announced that the dated community center on the Statenwijk would have to make way for a brand new two-storey building. The majority of the ground floor will be ALDI’s new home. The supermarket chain is now located a few hundred meters away at the Peyershof. The remaining space of the building, including the top floor, will belong to the new community centre. The municipality of Emmen, ALDI and the foundation Wijkcentrum Angelslo joined forces in the plans.

Splendid

As was somewhat expected, there was little resistance to this plan, and district chairman Jan de Boer noticed that. “They thought it was wonderful,” he laughs. So it was time, he said. The old district center consists of the buildings De Cluft and De Marke. Both buildings hover in age around fifty years and are therefore simply outdated,

In addition to the construction of the new accommodation, the surrounding area will also be renovated and a new connecting road will be built between the two parking fields behind the shopping center and the sports hall. Recently, a new traffic circle was constructed at the intersection of Statenweg and Landschapslaan. For most residents, this intersection is the entrance to the neighborhood shopping centre.

one way street

The exit towards Landschapslaan is close to the exit for the parking spaces at the front of the shopping centre. This caused some concern for local residents. The connecting road also raised many questions. Neighborhood residents therefore wondered whether it would not be better to have one-way traffic here. But that turned out to be difficult, because it does not benefit the spread of parked cars over the two parking fields.

The question was also raised whether the supply of shops by trucks would still lead to traffic problems. These and also sounds have been transferred to the municipality of Emmen, which was also present on this evening. If there are no objections, De Boer expects to continue with the demolition of the old community center this year. “In that scenario, the fences will be around the building before Christmas.”
