David Lowery has announced a new A24-produced film. Anne Hathaway and Michaela Coel will play the main roles in the music drama “Mother Mary”, which will be shot exclusively in North Rhine-Westphalia. The Cologne-based augenschein film production company is cooperating with the well-known independent production company.

“Lowery will direct from his script and stage an epic pop melodrama about a fictional musician (Hathaway) and her relationship with an iconic fashion designer (Coel),” reads the augenschein website. The Film- und Mediengesellschaft NRW supports the project with one million euros.

After “A Ghost Story” in 2017 and “The Green Knight” in 2021, this is Lowery’s third collaboration with A24. He celebrated his breakthrough in 2013 with “Ain’t Them Bodies Saints”, “Mother Mary” will be his eighth feature film. A release date or when filming will begin is not yet known.

Songs for the upcoming project come from indie and pop virtuoso Jack Antonoff and singer Charlie XCX. Antonoff recently won his sixth solo Grammy, bringing his total to eight. The 30-year-old already contributed the single “Hot Girl” for the A24 film “Bodies Bodies Bodies” last year.
