Netzhoppers defy failures: “The team has a positive character”

The Berlin volleyball players recently had to do without several players due to injuries. Nevertheless, the team won against TSV Haching Munich in the intermediate round and showed character.

The morale of the Netzhoppers KW-Bestensee has not suffered from the many setbacks this season. Despite adverse circumstances due to numerous injury-related absences, the team managed to win 3:1 (25:20, 25:20, 26:28, 25:22) at home against TSV Haching Munich in the intermediate round of the volleyball Bundesliga. It was only the fourth victory for Brandenburg in the 18th game of the season. The team got two of them against the bottom team VC Olympia Berlin, the other two were brought in against the penultimate Haching.

More responsibility for young people

“There is a positive character in our team overall, even if it doesn’t always come across that way in the game,” says setter Mario Schmidgall. The 24-year-old is one of four important players for the Netzhoppers who were missing against Haching. He and veteran Dirk Westphal had to pass because of finger injuries. Middle blocker Max Chamberlain has been out for a long time due to knee problems, Malachi Murch suffers from shoulder problems.

“It’s very frustrating to have so many injuries – mostly for completely unexpected reasons,” said coach Tomasz Wasilwoski. Inevitably, younger players like Max Schulz, Moritz Eckardt or Gian-Luca Berger have to take on more responsibility.

Schulz shone against Haching in front of only 322 spectators inBestensee with 18 points as the best attacker of his team. Schmidgall is not afraid that the many defeats this season will lead to a low mood, especially among the young players, because: “Everyone here tries to get better and better in training to help the team. There is no finger pointing.”

The win against Haching in a game that was on the whole quite mediocre should give the Netzhoppers the boost of motivation to maybe score points in the next intermediate round game at Volleys Herrsching on Wednesday – despite all the personnel worries.
