The Dutch international Memphis Depay has left his stay at the traditional Brazilian club Corinthians open. The 32-year-old attacker’s contract expires in the summer. Although he was ready for talks, “a solution must be found that can be implemented given the situation of the club, the board and the existing structures,” said Depay, who spoke of a “difficult situation” at Corinthians.

In a conversation with the former Brazilian top professional and world champion Romário, Depay said according to “Voetbal International”: “Corinthians and I have to sit down together and I’m definitely ready for that. We have to discuss it. (…) Many people are working against the club and blocking its growth opportunities, both structurally and financially. Corinthians is one of the largest and highest-grossing clubs, but at the same time it is losing a lot of money. (…) I don’t want to spill everything, but I know a lot. I want to help. Sometimes you have to say things that aren’t nice.”

The striker was not more specific. At the same time, Depay criticized the reporting on his contract situation: “There are certain things, like the details of my contract, that people find difficult to accept and form an opinion about. Everything is public, except sometimes the truth. (…) The media can publish news every day. There are forty million fans and even if only ten percent of them believe that, that’s a big number.”

Depay joined Corinthians in September 2024 after a short period of absence from a club. Since then, there have been 34 scorers from 70 games, and his former peak market value of 55 million has fallen to 8 million euros. In the winter, the 108-time international Oranjes player was linked with a move to Saudi Arabia, and there was also said to be interest from Fenerbahce.
