The Netherlands have a new national coach. This also includes a successor for an ex-Bavaria coach for women.
The Dutch national team of women has found a new national coach. Arjan Veurink will succeed Andries Jonker after the European Championship in Switzerland. This was announced by the Dutch Association KNVB on Tuesday.
Jonker had already announced in January to clear his position after the tournament (July 2 to 27). The contract of the former Bundesliga coach expires and is not extended. At that time, the KNVB said it was “time for a new phase”.
Veurink has many years of experience at the highest level. The 38-year-old worked as an assistant to Sarina Wiegman for over eight years-first in the Netherlands, most recently at the English national team. There he will end his work after the European Championship. Veurink: “I am ready to stand on my own feet.”
The coaching duo Wiegman and Veurink celebrated great successes: in 2017 the Netherlands led to the European Championship title, two years later the team reached the final of the World Cup. Success continued in England too: In 2022, the “Lionesses” won the European Championship title in their own country with a 2-1 extension to Germany-the first big title for England since 1966.
“He knows what is required at the absolute top, but also knows how important it is to maintain the connection to the base,” said KNVB sports director Nigel de Jong.
