Netflix refused to broadcast Russian federal TV channels

According to Russian law, from March 1, the streaming service was obliged to include 20 Russian federal channels in the broadcast grid.

Netflix will stop broadcasting the 20 Russian federal TV channels that are required by Russian law starting March 1. About this company representative informed Variety magazine.

“Given the current situation, we have no plans to add these channels to our service,” he said.

In December 2021, Roskomnadzor added Netflix to its registry of audiovisual services. Then it became the first foreign service included in this register. The owners of such services must prevent the use of their platform for the commission of criminal offenses, establish age restrictions for content, and comply with Russian media laws, as well as laws on elections and referendums.

As specified TASS Alexei Byrdin, head of the Internet Video Association, said that Netflix would also be required to broadcast 20 federal channels starting in March 2022, when the corresponding article of the Russian law “On Information” comes into force. “The service will be obliged to fulfill the requirements of Article 10.5 of the Law “On Information”, including its latest additions, for example, to distribute 20 federal TV channels,” he noted.
