The preload date for GTA VI has been announced. In this article, I’ll reveal when you can start playing and what we know about its download size.
Prior to the release, you’ll have plenty of time to download GTA VI. Rockstar has specified that the preload will start at “local midnight” on November 12, 2026. This means midnight in the timezone of your store account. For German accounts, that translates to 00:00 on the night of Wednesday to Thursday. And no, changing your console’s timezone won’t help; Rockstar is referring to the store region, not your system settings.
Preload Available for Physical Editions
Those who pre-ordered digitally can preload the game easily. Physical purchasers can also preload, but they will need their download code first. It’s a surprising transition: Rockstar is selling a physical version of GTA VI, but the box contains no disc—just a download code on a slip of paper.
Anyone looking to sell or lend the game later will face a challenge, as the code becomes worthless after it’s redeemed. Fortunately, boxes will start shipping on November 12, providing buyers the chance to utilize preload as well. Notably, there is no physical Ultimate Edition; upgrades are purely digital.
It’s important to note that PlayStation codes are region-specific. If someone buys a box in another country with a German PSN account, they may face activation issues. Luckily, Rockstar has stated that this restriction does not apply to Xbox codes.
Unlock Timing on November 19 at Midnight
You will be able to play GTA VI starting at 00:00 (CET) on the night of November 18 to 19. This is confirmed in the PlayStation Store. There won’t be any early access options for more expensive editions; both Standard and Ultimate Edition will unlock simultaneously. If you come across any offer claiming early access—beware, as it’s most likely a scam.
Interestingly, what’s missing from the store listings is the mention of an online mode. Both PlayStation and Xbox have listed GTA VI strictly as a single-player title. Whether or not a successor to GTA Online will emerge remains a mystery, as Rockstar has been tight-lipped thus far.
Moreover, PlayStation is marketing the game as “PS5 Pro Enhanced.” Owners of the Pro model can look forward to higher resolutions and a more stable framerate. However, how this graphically intensive game will perform on standard consoles remains uncertain, with final performance assessments expected shortly before the game’s release.
GTA VI: Download Size Uncertainty
Currently, Rockstar has not disclosed any specific details regarding the download size. Estimates have been making the rounds on the internet, varying between 200 to 676 GB, none of which can be confirmed. The notion of 676 GB appears absurd, but even 200 GB would be significant. The fact that Rockstar opens the preload a whole week before the launch suggests that the download is unlikely to be light. Additionally, anticipate that a patch will likely be available on the release day.
