Netflix and Co. clean up – TECHBOOK

The nominations for the 2022 Emmy Awards have been announced. Streaming providers are again strongly represented, especially Netflix. The big competitor Disney+, on the other hand, is far behind.

The counterpart to the Oscars, which is awarded for films, are the Emmy Awards for series. The nominees for the prestigious award have now been announced. A trend has been evident there for several years: streaming productions are increasingly prominent. A few years ago it was still a hotly debated rarity for series to be nominated by streaming providers, but these are now in the majority. However, the nominations also reflect the actual picture of viewing habits. And streaming services in particular are increasingly producing series. Netflix and Co. are also strongly represented at the Emmy Awards 2022. Only Disney+ gets far fewer nominations than expected. TECHBOOK provides an overview of the nominees and assesses their chances.

These are the nominees for the 2022 Emmy Awards

The Emmy Awards – or “Emmys” for short – are being presented by the Academy of Television Arts & Sciences (ATAS) for the 74th time this year. We will find out who the winners are on September 12, 2022. Alongside the Oscars and Academy Awards for films, the Grammy Awards for music and the Tony Awards for theater, it is one of the four major prizes in the US entertainment industry. There are now more than 90 categories in which series, actors, directors and co. can win the coveted trophy.

In this article, we only list the nominees in the main categories comedy, drama and mini or anthology series. The full list is available on the official website.

Even more prestigious, however, is the “Drama” category. By the way, the most successful series when it comes to Emmys is “Game of Thrones”. The series was able to win this award a total of 57 times, including various times for the best drama series. Since the final season, however, this category has become much more exciting again – including the Emmy Awards 2022. Striking in this prominent segment: Netflix is represented three times and thus ahead of the long-term leader HBO (+ HBO Max). The latest season “Stranger Things” is also nominated, the finale of which was only shown on Netflix in early July. Season 5 should then be a hot candidate in the coming years – you can find all the information about it in the linked article.

The best mini-series and actors in this category

Also not to be underestimated is the category for mini or anthology series. A lot of shows are designed to last just one season from the start, so the competition in that space is particularly fierce. This is also evident from this year’s nomination list, which includes major productions such as “Dopesick” or “Inventing Anna”.

These series come out on top at the 2022 Emmy Awards

Probably the most promising series at this year’s Emmys are “Succession” from HBO and the surprising Netflix hit “Squid Game”. The HBO series was able to collect 25 nominations via a media module and its family intrigues, “Squid Game” still has 14 nominations. The South Korean drama about social inequality is considered the most likely candidate for one of the really big prizes. Even higher in the number of nominations is the HBO drama Euphoria, also starring the nominated Zendaya. However, the series “Severance” from Apple TV+ also surprisingly received 14 nominations.

Last year, Netflix claimed the title of Best Drama Series with the fourth season of The Crown. The series is not among the nominees this year as there is no new season released. Accordingly, at the Emmy Awards 2022, it should be the claim of the streaming service to defend the title with “Squid Game”, “Ozark” or even the 4th season of the dark fantasy hit “Stranger Things”.

In the comedy series, “Abbott Elementary” and “Ted Lasso” are the big favorites. The HBO production “The White Lotus” is considered the most promising candidate for the mini-series. Competition comes mainly from Netflix and Hulu in the form of the series “Inventing Anna” and “Dopesick”.

Netflix vs. Disney+ – no rivals at the 2022 Emmy Awards

While streaming leader Netflix was able to place itself in the nominations with numerous productions and Prime Video and Co. also appear frequently, it stands out that one big name is missing in the main categories: Disney+.

On the one hand, this is because the streaming service has so far produced few series of its own that could appear at the Emmy Awards 2022. The provider buys nominated formats such as “Pam & Tommy” from the US service Hulu and shows them exclusively here in Germany. The same applies to “Only Murders in the Building” and “The Dropout”. Most of the “real” Disney+ originals so far are aimed at a younger audience. The exceptions are “Star Wars” and Marvel, the two big brands at Disney. At least “WandaVision” was able to record nominations last year, although the series then went largely empty-handed at the award ceremony. Those responsible should not like the fact that none of the Disney + series has been nominated in the important categories this Emmy season.

Because there would have been a few candidates, including the Marvel series “Hawkeye” and “Moon Knight”. The biggest favorite at Disney + was actually “Loki” with Tom Hiddleston. Although, among other things, “What if…?” was still taken into account in the later nomination rounds, that shouldn’t change much in the overall picture.
