VEVEY (dpa-AFX) – The food giant Nestlé has accused the non-governmental organization Foodwatch of making false allegations in the case of contaminated infant formula and is threatening it with possible legal action if this happens again. If Foodwatch spreads misleading or false information, “Nestlé reserves the right to take all necessary steps to protect its interests,” said an open letter from the company, which was available to the AWP news agency on Sunday.
Nestlé said in the letter that the recalls were made a few days after the problem was confirmed and rejected allegations of delayed action, negligent handling of product safety and a cover-up of possible cases of illness. To date, there have been no medical reports proving a connection between the products and illnesses, the letter said.
With the letter, Nestlé responded to a criminal complaint filed by Foodwatch in Paris on Thursday. The lawsuit against unknown persons targets food companies such as Nestlé and Danone after their recalls of infant formula due to possible contamination with the bacterial toxin cereulide. The NGO joins eight families with nine sick children from France. Foodwatch accuses the companies of, among other things, marketing products that are harmful to health./to/hr/AWP/he
