The indie developer par274 has released SharpEmu, an experimental PS5 emulator written in C#. This project is particularly noteworthy as it successfully brings a commercial game to the PC with proper graphics. With Sony now choosing to keep its major single-player titles exclusive to its own consoles, PC gamers might find themselves waiting much longer for titles like GTA 6 compared to players on the PlayStation 5 (Pro) or Xbox Series X/S.
For those eager to play the blockbuster from Rockstar Games on their gaming PCs in November, managing expectations is crucial. The PS5 emulation is still far from delivering playable 3D titles, making the possibility of GTA 6 appearing on this new generation of emulators unlikely for quite some time.
Three Emulators Take on the Playstation 5
The current situation resembles the early days of ShadPS4, where PS4 emulation initially began with simple 2D titles before evolving to support heavyweights like Bloodborne. Currently, three projects are pursuing the goal of PS5 emulation, benefitting from the console’s hardware, which closely aligns with modern gaming PCs, unlike earlier generations such as the PlayStation 2 or 3.

The main challenge lies less in replicating the CPU and more in translating Sony’s graphics interfaces, resembling a compatibility layer like Proton rather than traditional emulation.
SharpEmu: The First Game with Real Texture Representation
SharpEmu loads the eboot.bin of real PS5 games, executes native CPU instructions, and, according to its project page, already handles parts of kernel functions as well as initial shader and video output. The primary development platform is Windows, with the source code available on GitHub as a pure research project.
The showcase title is the 2D platformer Dreaming Sarah, which has become the first commercial PS5 game to achieve a fully rendered scene with correct textures. However, more demanding PS5 titles struggle early on; the Demon’s Souls remake manages to display its first video frame but then remains stuck in a loop, while Silent Hill: The Short Message has yet to progress beyond logos and warnings.

It may take some time before SharpEmu can reliably translate the PlayStation 5’s shaders into Vulkan API-compatible formats. Nonetheless, the beginning has certainly been made, and developments are ongoing not just with SharpEmu.
RPCSX and Kyty: Two More Attempts at PS5 Emulation
RPCSX is already capable of booting the PlayStation 5’s VSH system interface and safe mode, but currently requires either Linux or a Windows installation with Windows Subsystem for Linux (“WSL”).
The C++ project RPCSX takes a broader approach, addressing both PlayStation 4 and PlayStation 5 software. According to developers, sound and controller inputs currently function, but the launch of commercial games from the system interface is still in development and requires significant work.
Kyty, on the other hand, is considered a veteran among PS5 emulators, although the last official release from its original repository dates back to August 2022. It primarily supports simple PS4 games and homebrew for the PlayStation 5, with audio and network functions entirely absent.
A variant called KytyPS5 has recently managed to reach the startup logos of Silent Hill: The Short Message.
PS5 Emulation Before GTA 6: What is Realistic?
GTA 6 is set to be released exclusively for PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X/S on November 19, 2026. So far, Rockstar Games has not announced a PC version. This gap has fueled the emulator scene, especially given that Sony is now retreating from PC ports and has begun winding down disc production, intensifying the debate on game preservation.

Realistically speaking, no commercial 3D game currently runs on a PS5 emulator. The race for stable 3D rendering is the current focus, not Astro Bot or Vice City. The level of work needed for such projects, even with nearly identical x86 architecture, was demonstrated by Digital Foundry’s recent adaptation of the PlayStation 5 into a PS3 emulator.
It remains uncertain whether Sony will take legal action against these projects, as it has not yet pursued ShadPS4 and RPCS3.
