Don’t do things by halves: Neil Young is pulling his entire discography from Amazon and at the same time making it available for free to the people of Greenland. The decision is part of a political protest.
Complete withdrawal from Amazon Music
The Canadian-American musician had already announced in October that he would remove his works from Amazon. In a recent post on “Neil Young Archives“Young now confirmed the consistent implementation of this decision. His reasoning is aimed directly at Amazon founder Jeff Bezos and his political commitment.
“Amazon is owned by Jeff Bezos, a billionaire supporter of the president,” reads Neil Young’s message to his fans as context. And the actions of the US government and its immigration agency ICE are unacceptable to him. Young continues to urge his listeners to also avoid Amazon.
Alternative sources of supply for fans
For music lovers, Neil Young offers various alternatives for purchasing his music. “Record stores carry all my vinyl and CDs, and the digital music world offers numerous alternative ways to purchase my music,” he writes. Young wants to maintain that his music will not be available on Amazon as long as the company belongs to Bezos.
The 80-year-old also admits that this attitude is damaging his record label in the short term, but believes the message is important and clear. Young recommends purchasing music through local stores and independent digital services to support individual businesses rather than large corporations.
Solidarity action for Greenland
In parallel to the Amazon boycott, Neil Young launched a special campaign for the people of Greenland. In response to political threats against the country from Trump, he is making his entire music catalog as well as an extensive archive of live concerts, studio outtakes and concert films available free of charge.
