Nazarbayev’s lifetime chairmanship of the Security Council canceled

The Parliament of Kazakhstan has canceled the life-long chairmanship of the country’s first president, Nursultan Nazarbayev, in the Security Council.

In the summer of 2019, he left the presidency of his own free will and transferred powers to Kassym-Jomart Tokayev. But then he retained the posts of head of the Security Council and chairman of the ruling Nur Otan party.

And the day before, in an address to the people of Kazakhstan, Nazarbayev said that Tokayev now has full power, is the head of the Security Council and will soon be elected chairman of Nur Otan.
