Kylian Mbappé is back in the circle of the French national team before the National League games against Croatia. His personal crisis and problems with Didier Deschamps are history.

Kylian Mbappé has recently experienced something that he didn’t know yet: a sporty crisis. After shot his second penalty within a week in December 2024 against Athletic Bilbao and had a large proportion of the 1-2 defeat, Real Madrid’s striker said: “I’m destroyed.” At the same time, this deep case was also a moment that was important to him.

The Mbappé crisis went beyond the sporty

“It became clear to me that I have to give everything for this jersey. I have to play with personality”said Mbappé. It took these negative moments that only culminated in his mishap against Bilbao to show him that it was not enough to be a gifted one in his field. Even one of the best football players in the world has to bring more than his skills, he also has to be a worker, physically and mentally.

It had to be (false) shot because it apparently hadn’t enough that Didier Deschamp had previously dispensed with the captain of the French national team in October and November. That had sporting reasons, but also those that can be found next to the square. Discreps with players and trainers, but certainly also the topics with which Mbappé has to cope as a person. He leads a legal dispute with his ex-club Paris St. Germain And there were allegations of rape to which the investigation was set.

Mbappé and coach Deschamps – dispute, but no custody

Mbappé is sporty but the old one, which is why he is logically again with the national team. “If there had been a break, I would never have reacted to his calls. I arrive as if I had never been away”said the star striker in an interview with “Le Parisien“About a possible mismatch of Deschamps. “I never stopped contact with the coach, my relationship with him has not changed.”

Mbappé admitted that it “Differences of opinion” would have given, but they have no major effects: “We celebrated success together, our relationship cannot end up in the garbage can because of two or three differences of opinion that are not serious at all.” Deschamps would always have informed him about the waiver of him beforehand. “There was no moment when we didn’t agree”according to Mbappé.

With his gates, he himself made sure that there is no way to get past him. He already met 31 times in his first season. Mbappé is already number four of the players with the most goals in their premiere season at the “Royal” – and there is a lot to say that he will replace Ivan Zamorano (37 goals in the 1992/93 season). Mbappé is now also celebrated in Madrid.

Deschamps gives Mbappé the bandage back

This should now be the case again in France, the 26-year-old will again lead his home country, as Deschamps announced on Tuesday, as captain in the National League quarter-final against Croatia (20th and 23.03.2025). Deschamps cleared the deep mbappé: “He has the right to have a phase in which he is not so well. Kylian is very connected to the French national team, even if he had a complicated personal phase. He found all of his means, that shows up in his game and in his head.”

And because Mbappé (now again) is so important for the national team, he is constantly asked about the possible successor of Deschamps, which will stop after the 2026 World Cup. France dreams of becoming Zinédine Zidane, Mbappé himself also described him in the past as “My idol”. But when it comes to whether his “idol” will also become his future national coach, he keeps up.

Will “Idol” Zidane Mbappés next coach?

“I know who to talk about, but I will not talk about him because that’s not my role”Wich Mbappé. “There is a president of the Federation, he is the one who will make this decision. Everyone talking about Zidane, so we won’t pretend that we are someone who lives in a cave and does not know what’s going on. But it’s not my job to talk about it.”

Behind closed doors, however, he is certainly asked about his thoughts by the association president Philippe Diallo. Mbappé has become world champion with France, led the “Bleus” to the World Cup final a second time and is said to give Deschamps a glorious farewell next year. Mbappé is back, the fallen national hero takes the restart.
