National coach promises keeper Schult a comeback

Goalkeeper Almuth Schult is about to make a comeback in the national soccer team after almost three years.

The 31-year-old from VfL Wolfsburg is scheduled to play against Serbia in the DFB women’s World Cup qualifier on April 12 (4 p.m. / ZDF) in Belgrade. This was announced by national coach Martin Voss-Tecklenburg at a video press conference.

“As a coach, I want to get the feeling of how Almuth acts with the team when they’re on the pitch,” said Voss-Tecklenburg. “If everything goes normally, Almuth will play in the second game.” In the qualifying match for the World Cup in Australia and New Zealand in 2023 on April 9 (4:10 p.m. / ARD) in Bielefeld against Portugal, Merle Frohms should be between the posts. The Frankfurter is considered a regular goalkeeper.

Schult played her last international match on June 29, 2019 in the World Cup defeat against Sweden. She then underwent shoulder surgery and gave birth to twins in April 2020. Most recently she was in the German squad, but was absent from the Arnold Clark Cup in England in February due to corona quarantine. Ann-Katrin Berger from Chelsea FC, currently the third goalkeeper in the DFB selection, was allowed to play a game there.

Schult had always emphasized that the EM in England (July 6th to 31st) was her goal. It was announced this week that the goalkeeper would move to Angels City FC in California after the European Championship. The club is owned by women. Actress Natalie Portman is one of the founders.

“I talked to Almuth about it for a long time. Of course it’s great if you can choose this path at an advanced stage of your career. It’s great to experience a new adventure with the whole family again,” said Voss-Tecklenburg .
