The World Darts Championship at Alexandra Palace in London is famous for its good atmosphere. One spectator even became the main attraction for a short time – and then had to leave.
When Nathan Aspinall secured his place in the round of 16 at the Darts World Cup with a clear victory, it wasn’t just his strong sporting performance that caused a stir. The 33-year-old suddenly found himself at the center of an unusual scene during his 4-0 win in the third round: He stopped before the decisive leg to watch a fan in a hot dog costume downing an entire beer mug – what corresponds to an amount of around four large glasses.
The crowd celebrated the moment loudly while Aspinall looked in the direction of the fan on stage. But the mood quickly changed when security forces escorted the spectator out of the hall a short time later and the audience reacted with loud boos.
After his comfortable win with a three-dart average of 92.17, Aspinall spoke out about the incident. He paused briefly to watch the spectacle: “I couldn’t start because I wanted to see it. But respect to him – even if he was thrown out.” Aspinall emphasized how much he appreciated the special atmosphere at the Darts World Cup: “I love the Ally Pally for the party atmosphere.”
In the next round Aspinall will face Ricardo Pietreczko. The German player previously prevailed against Scott Williams in an acclaimed match.
