Hours in traffic jams and miles of detours. This is what the working week looked like for many North Hollanders who used the N247 provincial road every day.
Now that the A10 exit is open again, the traffic jam may ease slightly. But residents of Edam-Volendam and Waterland still have to detour for miles via Purmerend. Because the road will be closed to traffic from 5 a.m. this morning until 5 a.m. on Monday, May 18, between Broek in Waterland and the Bernhardlaan exit to Monnickendam.
Bad timing?
“There was no other way,” says Stef Bakker of the province about the timing. The police had advised not to close everything at once for reasons of accessibility. “The more roads you close, the more people will have difficulty getting home,” Bakker said. Buses are still allowed to travel by road, but are also delayed because they are only allowed to drive through the construction site under supervision.
