Music dome on Marktplein in Emmen is given monumental status

The music dome on the Marktplein in Emmen has been designated as a municipal monument. The status was requested by the Music Dome Emmen Center foundation and approved by the municipality.

Due to its municipal status, the dome is better protected and changes may only be made after a permit has been granted. The dome may also no longer be moved. “The Music Dome is located in the heart of Esdorp Emmen,” the Foundation says in the application. “For this reason alone, the dome should be better protected. The Music Dome was the first to be built in Drenthe, on the part that is probably a remnant of the old village green of Emmen.”

Heritage councilor Dewy Leal is pleased with the approval of the monumental status. “We are putting our heritage in a positive light. We often hear that many old buildings have already disappeared in the center of Emmen. In addition, it has been more than ten years since a municipal monument was last designated. With the designation, we show that the municipality wants to preserve the heritage for the future.”

The Music Dome is the 76th municipal monument in Emmen. With this status, the Foundation can more quickly qualify for money for the umbrella organization from funds, for example if maintenance is required. In addition to the Music Dome, the military police barracks in Klazienaveen, the Zuiderkerk in Emmen and the St. Theresia School in Barger-Compascuum are also municipal monuments.
