The British Police have arrested a 26-year-old man suspected of murdering the former right-wing minister Ann Widdecombe, who was found dead on Thursday. The motive remains unclear.
Following the death of conservative MP Ann Widdecombe, a 26-year-old suspect has been taken into custody. The individual is accused of her murder, although the motive is still undetermined. Assistant Chief Constable Matt Longman stated at a press conference that the suspect has been arrested on suspicion of murder, noting that there is no indication of a terrorist motive or that the act was politically motivated.
Widdecombe was discovered deceased at her residence in Devon. The former politician, a staunch advocate for Brexit while serving in the European Parliament, held ultraconservative views, including advocating for the reinstatement of the death penalty and opposing same-sex marriage as well as gender self-determination for transgender individuals.
Serving as a Conservative MP from 1987 to 2010, Widdecombe held various ministerial roles under then-Prime Minister John Major.
Home Secretary: “Extremely Shocking”
British Home Secretary Shabana Mahmood described Widdecombe’s death as “extremely shocking.” In a statement on the platform X, she indicated that the Home Office stands ready to provide any necessary support for ongoing investigations and urged the public to refrain from speculation. Prime Minister Keir Starmer expressed his distress, as did Opposition Leader Kemi Badenoch.
Over the past decade, two sitting Members of Parliament in the UK have been murdered: Labour MP Jo Cox was killed by a far-right individual during the Brexit campaign in 2016, and Conservative MP David Amess was stabbed in 2021 by a supporter of the Islamist extremist group ISIS.
