Setback in the relegation battle: Eintracht Braunschweig has to admit defeat in the basement duel with Preußen Münster. Even interim leadership is not enough.

Eintracht Braunschweig suffered a severe setback in the bottom of the 2nd Bundesliga table. On Sunday, BTSV lost to rivals Preußen Münster 1:2 (0:0). Central defender Lukas Frenkert had given Lower Saxony the lead (56th minute). However, Jorrit Hendrix (71′) and Oliver Batista Meier (75′) turned the game around within five minutes.

As usual, Eintracht used the usual pressing practice under coach Heiner Backhaus in front of their home crowd on Hamburger Straße and sometimes posed problems for the guests from Münster, especially in the first half. But Münster also remained dangerous through small pinpricks against the not always solid BTSV defense. A goal by Batista Meier did not count due to a previous handball (43′).

Eintracht got off to a better start in the second half. Frenkert headed in from close range after a corner to take the lead (56′). However, Münster had the right answer ready. Hendrix refined an attack via Jano ter Horst with a well-placed finish to equalize (71′). Shortly afterwards, Batista Meier shocked the home team with a direct free kick (75th). Ex-BTSV defender Paul Jaeckel, who now plays for Münster, received a yellow-red card in the final phase (88th). But that didn’t change the outcome of the game.

Uncomfortable weeks await BTSV and coach Backhaus. Eintracht falls back to relegation place 16 in the table. The lead over a direct relegation zone is now only two points. Meanwhile, Münster overtakes BTSV and is now 13th in the table with one point more.
