The municipality of Assen was selected by the European Commission as a finalist for the European Green Leaf Award.

This European prize is intended for cities up to 100,000 inhabitants who are committed to sustainability, a healthy living environment and adaptation to climate change.

A panel of independent experts has assessed the nominations submitted. Assen scored in the field of biodiversity, green space, circular economy and climate change. The other finalists are Benidorm (Spain), Saint Quentin (France) and Siena (Italy).

The prize is awarded to one or two cities. The winner (s) will be announced October 2, 2025. Every Green Leaf winner receives 200,000 euros.
