MPs arrive in Taiwan despite pressure from China

in the midst of Russian war of aggression against Ukraine US President Joe Biden said in May that the US was ready to provide military support to Taiwan in the event of a Chinese invasion. The White House and the Pentagon quickly backtracked.

Biden had made a similar statement in October, but since the Russian invasion of Ukraine on February 24 there have been growing concerns that Beijing could take a similar approach to Russia when dealing with Taiwan.

Biden’s comments provoked sharp reactions in China. Since then, Washington and Biden have repeatedly asserted that US policy on Taiwan has not changed. Of the Pelosi visit the island has brought tensions to boiling point.

China’s head of state Xi Jinping warned the US president in a telephone call about Taiwan: “Those who play with fire will eventually burn themselves.”
