FC Bayern again refrains from transfers in winter: Davies was the last purchase

Salihamidzic: “Very well prepared”

FC Bayern’s Hasan Salihamidzic referred to his own squad when asked about possible winter transfers and ruled out any significant newcomers. “We’ve done a lot this transfer summer. I think we are very well prepared for the season,” said the sports director of the record champions on Sunday the TV station “Bild”. The people of Munich are thus staying true to their motto of the past.

In the last two years, not a single newcomer has come to Säbener Straße in January, in 2020 Álvaro Odriozola was loaned out as a backup for the external defence. The last firm purchase in winter dates from January 2019: Alphonso Davies cost 10 million euros when he was transferred from the Vancouver Whitecaps. At the time, however, the Canadian was intended more as a promise for the future than as immediate help.

In January, Bavaria only handed over a sum of millions six times, and it was never more expensive than 17 million euros. Bayern paid this amount to TSG Hoffenheim for Luiz Gustavo in 2011 – but they hadn’t spent a single euro in the summer before the season and were only fifth under Louis van Gaal after the first half of the season. “We definitely wanted to continue on the path we had taken with a permeability for young players like David Alaba, Thomas Müller, Holger Badstuber and Diego Contento, but the squad should have been broadened. Gustavo was a purchase in the winter who was able to help us on the ‘6’ and as a left-back,” said then-sports director Christian Nerlinger in a recent TM interview return.

FC Bayern will not transfer Harry Kane or Marcus Thuram

This summer, €137.5m was spent, including for attacker Sadio Mané (€32m). In addition, Eric Maxim Choupo-Moting shone recently, with whom, according to Salihamidzic, a possible extension of the contract, which runs until 2023, should be discussed in due course. The commitments of Gladbach’s Marcus Thuram or Harry Kane from Tottenham Hotspur that were recently brought into play by the media will therefore not be addressed in the upcoming transfer window.

“Harry is a top player in the world, but we’re not talking about other players who are signed to other clubs,” Salihamidzic said of Kane. “We have an offensive that can keep up or be the best in Europe. We have different players. We tried to put together the offensive in such a way that the coach had a lot of options.”
