What started as a fun girls’ day ended in a nightmare for two friends on Saturday evening on the A58 near Moergestel. Unsuspectingly, they were driving on the highway around six o’clock when a car without lights suddenly came towards them. The wrong-way driver crashed into their car at full speed and caused major havoc on the highway. “You feel yourself swinging through the car and just hope there won’t be another blow,” she says, still in shock.

A few hours after the accident, the girls still can’t believe what happened to them. “We are very shocked,” says the co-driver, who wants to remain anonymous because of the impact.

Almost nothing is left of the white car the friends were driving in due to the enormous blow they received. “We were on our way back from a day of shopping in Germany, a fun girls’ day. Before we knew it, we saw a car without lights driving head-on towards us,” she reflects.

“It took us so long to stop.”

Her friend who was driving managed to swerve a bit. “As a result, the side of the car crashed into ours. We started turning, but luckily in a round and not upside down. It felt like it took so long for us to stand still. You feel yourself swinging through the car and just hope that there won’t be another impact.”

Thanks to the alarm function in their car, the friends were directly connected to the control room when they came to a standstill. “We had no idea where we were. My girlfriend got out of the car to see which road we were on,” she describes. What they saw around them was debris from several cars on the road. “It was a lot of devastation. Suddenly we heard sirens everywhere.”

“More than one angel on our shoulders.”

Miraculously, the friends survive some sore muscles unscathed. “We had more than one angel on our shoulders that we survived this,” she says.

A motorist, probably the wrong-way driver, was taken to hospital by ambulance with serious injuries. Blood is taken at the hospital to see whether the man was under the influence of alcohol or drugs.

A number of other people suffered minor injuries in the accident and were checked by ambulance personnel. “We saw about four to five cars that had been hit quite a bit and some cars had collateral damage such as a broken mirror,” one of the friends describes.

In any case, the girls are relieved that they escaped without serious injuries, but they will still have to recover from the shock.
