MotoGP, Dovizioso: ‘The renewal with Ducati? They never wanted to find the time ‘

The Italian driver talked about the divorce with Borgo Panigale again: “Money was not a problem, it was just that there was never time to discuss it”. Then on his return to Yamaha: “They wanted someone who had experience with another bike”

From duels with Marc Marquez at the temporary stop with the MotoGP. Andrea Dovizioso has seen his sporting life take a turn as abrupt as it is unexpected in recent seasons. Everything took place between 2020 and 2021, from the break with Ducati to the sabbatical, from the possible switch to Aprilia to the return to racing with the Petronas Yamaha team as Valentino Rossi’s companion. Significant milestones that Dovizioso retraced in an interview with Motorcycle News, not without launching a few digs.

ACCUSES

The first shock in order of time for Andrea came in 2020, when the partnership with Ducati ended after eight seasons. The Italian driver born in 1986 remembers the divorce: “There were many reasons why we broke up. For example, when it was time to negotiate the renewal, Ducati never found the time to discuss it. This already makes us understand what the atmosphere was like … “According to the former 125 world champion, the problem related to the engagement was not even touched upon:” We didn’t have the opportunity to talk about money with them, even if the money has never been a limit for me ”.

RETURN

A discourse, the economic one, also reiterated regarding the return to MotoGP with Razlan Razali’s team. Dovizioso explains: “It is not the salary that made me decide to return. I never chose a bike based on what I would earn. For this reason I did not want to retire. I simply would have raced only where I wanted and on my terms ”. Andrea continues: “A series of circumstances occurred, I was probably lucky. Yamaha was interested in getting feedback from an experienced rider from another bike and the sponsor wanted me. So far the bike has seemed ‘friendly’ to me, but there is a lot of work to do ”.

TEST

And to think that, in mid-2021, Dovizioso seemed close to an agreement with Aprilia. The Italian rider carried out some tests with the Noale manufacturer, but in the end no definitive agreement was reached for his return to MotoGP: “At the end of 2020 I said why I would be willing to race with them. I have clear ideas, regardless of whether they are good or bad ”. However, the balance of the short parenthesis remains positive: “Our test was a mutual benefit, good for both of us”.
